In the Middle Ages, the development of armour influenced weapon design. With more disputants wearing armour, it was necessary to have weapons that would nullify such an advantage. One of the weapons chosen for that purpose was the large battle axe, which was sharp enough to slash and cut, but also heavy enough to hit and disorient an opponent in full armor. The curved design of this axe blade allowed the bearer to slash as well as stab with its unique point. This axe is is based on an Italian 14th century museum piece. The axe has a cross-wound lanyard, wrapped handle and end chain attached to ensure a secure hold. Great for costuming or role-playing, this axe also makes a fine wall decoration.
