Designated "FALLSCHIRMJAEGER GEWEHR" 1942 (paratroop rifle, model of 1942), this weapon was designed by the Rheinmetall Company. The paratroops operated under the aegis of the Luftwaffe (air force), rather than the German Army. They required an assault rifle that was no more than 36 inches long and weighed approximately the same as the K98 Mauser bolt-action rifle. Hitler is said to have favored this weapon over the late MP-44 7.92mm Kurz assault rifle because the FG-42 utlitized the standard, full power rifle cartridge. Only 2,000 of this first model FG-42 were produced.
