Colt is a U.S. firearms manufacturer founded in 1847 by Samuel Colt. Colt's early history was mainly focused on the production of revolvers for which Samuel Colt held a patent. Revolvers such as the Colt Paterson, Walker Colt, and Colt Peacemaker were some of the most popular hand guns ever produced and helped shape the early history of the U.S. Colt is also well known for its line of semiautomatic pistols. The Colt Model 1911 semiautomatic pistol was the standard U.S. military sidearm from 1911 to 1985 and is still frequently used by military agencies, law enforcement, and civilians. Colt also held the production rights to the M16 assault rifle during the Vietnam War and still produces M16 and AR-15 variants for police and military.
